What is TD?

  • Tardive Dyskinesia (TD) is a chronic condition associated with taking certain mental health medications (antipsychotics). Some people may experience mild to severe uncontrollable TD movements in the face, torso, limbs, and fingers or toes. The movements are rapid and jerky or slow and writhing. TD is unlikely to improve without treatment.

What causes TD?

  • Taking certain mental health medications (antipsychotics) for a while can result in too much dopamine activity, leading to uncontrolled body movements known as TD. These medications may have been prescribed to treat one of the following conditions:

    • Depression

    • Bipolar disorder

    • Anxiety disorder

    • Schizoaffective disorder

  • Other prescription medications that treat upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting may also cause TD.

How common is TD?

  • TD affects around 600,000 people in the US.

  • Based on a study, about 25% of people with TD are diagnosed, and 75% of those potentially living with TD have not been diagnosed.

 TD Risk Factors

  • Older age (55+)
